The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) joined hands with Adidas as the official kit sponsor of the Indian cricket team back in May this year. As part of the lucrative signing, the German-based sports apparel company designed Team India’s jersey for the 2023 Asia Cup as well as for the subsequent 2023 World Cup in India.

As one can expect, the jersey is adorned with the iconic Indian blue, along with three stripes representing the nation’s tri-colour. According to Aaquib Wani, the designer of the Indian cricket team’s World Cup 2023 apparel, there’s much more to the jersey than meets the eye.

Designer and art director Aaquib Wani, who also designed India’s World Cup 2023 kit for Adidas, recently revealed intricate details behind the company’s thought process. While speaking with Crictracker, he stated that Adidas used a special fabric, Jacquard, for the production of Team India’s jerseys.

The fabric helps players to move around extreme heat without getting agitated about intense sweat. He explained that the fabric, developed by Adidas themselves, allows sweat to evaporate in much lesser time, which eventually avoids fabrics sticking into the skins of the players. He said:

“This is a special fabric that Adidas has developed, and that’s something that they also use across multiple different sports as well, and this is a Jacquard fabric that’s got to self-pattern to it as well.

So, when you sort of move around in the sun, you also see a different pattern onto it. I am sure you must have noticed something like that, and it’s a heat ready fabric which means the sweat will eventually evaporate in no time as well. So as much as you want to be on the field, it helps players to sort of not get agitated with the fabric sticking to their skin as well.”

The association with Adidas appears to have brought a touch of fortune to the Indian team, as evidenced by their juggernaut run at the 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the ‘Men in Blue’ commenced their subsequent World Cup 2023 campaign on a remarkable note, remaining undefeated in their first half with convincing wis in all five of their fixtures.
