In a significant development, Kane Williamson suffered a thumb injury on Friday during New Zealand’s World Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh in Chennai. He will likely miss the majority, if not the remainder, of the upcoming matches after missing the first two due to fitness concerns.

Williamson scored a brilliant 78 off 107 balls against Bangladesh to help New Zealand win three matches on the bounce. However, a throw from the non-strikers' end struck his left thumb directly, and the Kiwi captain immediately felt pain.

Williamson decided to retire hurt and got his left thumb x-rayed on Saturday night, and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) revealed ‘an undisplaced fracture’ after an X-ray.

Here’s what NZC said on Williamson’s availability

"He (Williamson) will remain in the @cricketworldcup squad with the aim of being available for the back end of pool play next month."

Meanwhile, New Zealand are set to bring in Tom Blundell as Williamson’s cover.

Williamson’s absence will pave the way again for Will Young, who made 70 against the Netherlands in their second game.

Table-toppers New Zealand will next play against Afghanistan on October 18 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
