Kane Williamson expanded his batting profile by unleashing yet another run-chase masterclass, this time against Bangladesh at the 2023 World Cup. The New Zealand captain, in his comeback international game, tactically scored 78 runs from his end before retiring himself due to a thumb injury.

Nonetheless, his innings defied Bangladesh’s experienced bowling attack and engineered an easy eight-wicket win for New Zealand. Their latest success in Chennai also marked their third successive triumph this tournament, as they jump to number one spot on the 2023 World Cup points table.

After the match, Williamson hailed team’s collective efforts for their comprehensive win, and heaped a unique praise on his star all-rounder Daryl Mitchell for his unbeaten batting effort.

Kane Williamson gives update on his thumb injury

Kane Williamson, who missed out six months’ worth of cricketing action after he slumped to a knee injury in IPL 2023 earlier this year, coped a new blow on his thumb during his opening World Cup 2023 appearance against Bangladesh. The latest injury curtailed his stay at the crease at 78, while his batting partner Daryl Mitchell finished off the proceedings by bludgeoning an unbeaten 89*.

Joking about his thumb wound after the match, Williamson said:

“Just made holding the bat a little tough. Secondary to the thumb (laughs).”

The ‘Black Caps’ veteran praised team’s collective performance, and also singled out Mitchell for his aggressive approach in the run-chase. The legendary batsman described his star all-rounder as a great contributor who has always been a “team first guy”. He stated:

“Was nice to be out there and be part of some of the partnerships. Just scrapped through the new ball. Great team performance. Mitchell is a great contributor. He is a team first guy. He has been great to watch.”

Kane Williamson further hailed New Zealand’s pace attack for providing him early breakthroughs within the powerplay. The cricketer also acknowledged Lockie Ferguson’s ‘Player of the Match’ performance, one that yielded him three key wickets for just 49 runs.

New Zealand will now face Afghanistan for their subsequent World Cup 2023 challenge on October 16. The much-awaited contest will also be played at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
