Babar Azam made a shocking announcement on Wednesday (November 15) to take all the limelight during India’s World Cup 2023 semi-final against New Zealand. The 29-year-old, who has been massively criticised following Pakistan’s shocking exit from the competition, decided to step down from the captaincy role across formats.

"I vividly remember the moment when I received the call from PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. Over the past four years, I've experienced many highs and lows on and off the field, but I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan's pride and respect in the cricket world." Babar Azam said in a statement on social media announcing his decision.

Netizens were stunned after Babar’s shocking announcement went viral on social media in no time. Although many felt the decision was ‘wise,’ many believe the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ‘kicked him out’ because of his recent poor batting performance brought on by increased pressure.

Babar had a disastrous campaign as a batsman for Pakistan, having aggregated 320 runs in the World Cup 2023 at a strike rate of 82.90. He came in as the No. 1 ranked ODI batsman in the world ahead of the competition but failed to remain there after his woes.

Who will be Pakistan's next captain across formats? We will soon find out.
