Virat Kohli’s trademark ‘flick of the wrist for six’ erupts at Wankhede Stadium during India’s all-important World Cup 2023 semi-final clash against New Zealand on Wednesday (November 15).
Easily the best shot of the day thus far came in the 30th over of India’s innings which Kohli smacked against his Under-19 World Cup batch’s opposition Tim Southee, against whom he started playing way back in 2008.
Batting on 57* off 68 deliveries, Kohli anticipated a short ball was coming towards him. He stepped out of the crease, and made it a half-volley before using his bottom hand to play. The timing was so perfect that his perfect wrist work sent the ball over deep mid-wicket for a 92-metre maximum.
While the shot looked so elegant to watch, it also brought memories of Kohli’s spectacular IPL 2016 campaign, in which the ace batsman tallied a whopping 973 runs throughout the season for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The record, of course, still remains unbroken.

At the time of writing, India are in total control, having reached 239/1 in 33.1 overs, with Kohli batting on 79* off 83 balls. Shreyas Iyer is still going strong, reaching to 31* off 23 balls.
