In an upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in Dubai, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is set to address a vital agenda: securing India's participation in the Champions Trophy 2025 scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan.

The need for clarity comes against a backdrop where India, following governmental directives, has refrained from playing in Pakistan since 2008, including opting out of the Asia Cup 2023 held there due to similar concerns, leading to a hybrid model for the tournament's execution.

A report from PTI reveals that Naqvi plans to engage with both the ICC Executive Board and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. Given the historical reluctance and considering the event is over a year away, the quest for an early confirmation poses a significant challenge.

"The biggest concern is the participation of India in Pakistan. PCB doesn’t want the repeat of the Asia Cup," a PCB source expressed, highlighting the importance of avoiding last year's issues.

The meeting is crucial for Pakistan, which aims to convince the BCCI and ICC by assuring enhanced security and other arrangements, reflective of a stable governance structure post-elections in the country.

"Naqvi will try to convince Jay Shah that Pakistan has a new government in place and there will be no security and other issues for them to compete in Pakistan," the PCB source added.

From the BCCI's perspective, the decision hinges on the Indian government's stance, with a BCCI source stating, "It all depends on the Indian government. The BCCI will follow what the government says."

This highlights the complexity of international cricket tours, which often go beyond the cricket field, entwined with geopolitical dynamics.

Despite these challenges, the PCB remains hopeful, planning to update the ICC on stadium upgrades in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, and the overall preparedness of Pakistan to host the Champions Trophy.

As the meeting in Dubai approaches, cricket fans eagerly await a positive outcome that could pave the way for India's return to Pakistani soil for a major cricketing event, bridging a gap that has persisted for nearly two decades.
