'The Greatness of Virat Has Been Reduced': Harbhajan Singh's Bold Remarks on RCB Star

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has made some bold remarks regarding Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) star player, Virat Kohli, ahead of the IPL 2024 season opener against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 22. 

Harbhajan believes that Kohli's greatness has somewhat diminished, particularly at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. The RCB great completed 16 years with the franchise and through the years has been the backbone of the team. 



In an interview with Star Sports, Harbhajan pointed out that while Kohli holds the record for being the all-time top run-scorer in the IPL, with an impressive tally of 7,263 runs in 237 matches, his performance at the Chepauk Stadium hasn't been as remarkable. Kohli has amassed 985 runs against CSK in 30 matches, with a highest score of 90, indicating a relative struggle at this venue.

Harbhajan highlighted the challenges of batting at the Chepauk, emphasizing the peculiar bounce and the bowling prowess of players like Ravindra Jadeja. He stated:

“The greatness of Virat has been reduced in terms of his overall performance at that venue. It is a tricky venue to bat, especially as an opening batsman against a sort of weird tennis ball type bounce."

However, Harbhajan also acknowledged Kohli's potential to deliver match-winning performances if he can anchor his innings effectively. He stressed the importance of Kohli batting through the majority of the innings to secure victory for RCB, citing the example of Kohli's stellar performance in the 2016 season where he scored 973 runs in 16 matches.

For RCB to clinch their maiden IPL title, Harbhajan believes that Kohli needs to replicate his outstanding 2016 season. Despite Kohli's prowess with the bat, RCB's performance in IPL 2023 fell short, as they failed to qualify for the playoffs, underscoring the significance of Kohli's form for the team's success.

As the IPL 2024 season approaches, all eyes will be on Kohli as he aims to silence the doubters and lead RCB to glory, starting with the challenging encounter against CSK at the Chepauk Stadium.
