The much celebrated and anticipated cricketing league, the Indian Premier League (IPL), hit a rough patch in 2016 when they banned Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two years.

It was a massive blow for both franchises as they missed the 2016 and 2017 seasons, while the players were distributed to two new teams- Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants. But

Why did BCCI ban CSK and RR for two years?

Notably, CSK's Gurunath Meiyappan, former team principal and owner Srinivasan's son-in-law and Rajasthan Royals' former team owner and Shilpa Shetty's husband Raj Kundra were suspended from cricketing action after they were found guilty of betting charges.

Why Were CSK Banned From IPL?

During the IPL 2013 season, Gurunath Meiyappan came under the scanner after allegations of engaging in betting practises, which is a major offence according to sports laws. He was also arrested on the night of the 2013 IPL final between CSK and Mumbai Indians.

He was found guilty of the offence in 2015 and slapped with a lifetime ban from cricketing activities by the BCCI. As a result of his actions, the Super Kings missed the following two seasons in IPL - 2016 and 2017.

Why Were Rajasthan Royals Banned From IPL?

Similar to CSK, Royals Group's Raj Kundra was found guilty of engaging in betting practices and handed a similar punishment, as the one Meiyappan received by Justice Lodha.

Further, Rajasthan Royals were also under the scanner because of spot-fixing charges in 2013 that led to the end of the careers of Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan.

It is worth noting that the Court had set up a three-member committee in 2013, which featured Justice Lodha. Following the investigation, the judgement was announced in 2015, which is why both teams missed the 2016 and 2017 seasons, before returning for IPL 2018.
