In a hilarious yet bizzare incident, Shreyas Iyer's father Santosh Iyer revealed that he had taken the star batter to a psychologist when his performance had dipped significantly in the early days of his cricketing career. Recalling a time when Shreyas was playing for the Under-16 team, Santosh revealed that his son experienced a dip in form, which left him concerned.
Shreyas Iyer Distracted By Love Claims Father
A coach had mentioned that while Shreyas had great potential, he had seemingly lost his focus. This deeply worried his father, who thought that Shreyas had fallen in love. He then took Shreyas to a psychologist who assured him that this was a natural phase every sportsperson undergoes.
The psychologist explained that such dips in performance are normal and form a part of a player's growth trajectory. He advised Santosh to ease his worries and help his son through this challenging phase.
"When Shreyas was four years old, we played cricket in the house with a plastic ball. Even then, he was middling the ball in the way that convinced me that the boy had real talent. So, we did everything in our power to make sure he can fulfil his potential," his father revealed in an interview.
Shreyas Iyer- The Golden Brain Boy
Nevertheless, Shreyas Iyer has come a long way since then, and 2024 has indeed been a fantastic year for him, marked with a string of successes. Iyer, first led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third Indian Premier League title.
His success at the IPL was followed by him leading Mumbai to victory in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), bringing home their second title in the competition. Iyer fought back very well, despite getting dropped from the Indian team playing XI and getting no BCCI annual contracts.
In the ICC ODI World Cup, he batted terrifically and finished as India's third-highest run scorer. He also made amends in red-ball cricket as he became the highest scorer in Ranji Trophy by Mumbai. Now, after being released by KKR, he has been bought by Punjab Kings for a record Rs 26.75 crore in the 2025 IPL auction, where he is expected to lead the franchise and break their title drought.
