The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCCI) unveiled a strong 15-player Bangladesh men’s squad for the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Featuring seasoned campaigners like Mushfiqur Rahim, Mustafizur Rahman and Mahmudullah, the team will be led by charismatic skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto.

However, as predicted, legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was left out of Bangladesh’s squad for the premier tournament. Here, we examine the exact reasons as to why the 37-year-old Bangladeshi veteran was excluded from the team during the twilight stage of his international career.

Shakib Al Hasan out of CT squad, reasons explained

Shakib Al Hasan was excluded from Bangladesh’s squad for the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. His exclusion marks the first-ever occasion where a Bangladeshi team will head into an ICC event without the premier all-rounder, ever since he made his international debut.

While Shakib Al Hasan has expressed his ‘fears for safety’ in Bangladesh owing to his political ties with the fallen Sheikh Hasina-led government, the cricketer is also being scrutinized for his on-field misadventures.

Back in September, Shakib was reported for having a suspect bowling action by the umpires during his one-match County stint for Surrey. He was subsequently banned from bowling by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as well as from the International Cricket Board (ICC) for the time being.

Recent reports indicated that the cricketer failed a test of his bowling action as conducted in Chennai in December. With Shakib being barred from bowling, the BCB must have not estimated the cricketer worthy enough for the national squad as a batter alone.

Nonetheless, Bangladesh will commence their 2025 Champions Trophy campaign with a Group A match against Team India at the Dubai International Stadium on February 20. Najmul Hossain Shanto’s troops will subsequently face New Zealand and Pakistan on February 24 and February 27 respectively in Rawalpindi.
