Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc., is pushing his bid to invest in a London-based cricket team from England’s The Hundred. Pichai is a part of a group of Silicon Valley executives and business leaders who have demonstrated a keen interest in acquiring either the Oval Invincibles or London Spirit ahead of the 2025 edition of England’s 100-ball competition.
Google CEO to invest in The Hundred
The Sundar Pichai-starrer has reportedly submitted a bid of £80 million for either one of the two London-based teams from The Hundred. Apart from the Google CEO, some of the other members in the group include Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen and Silver Lake Management’s Egon Durban.
Earlier, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced its plans of selling a stake in The Hundred franchises to potential investors in a bid to raise funds for the 100-ball tournament.
Notably, Nadella and Narayen have already invested in the USA-based Major League Cricket.
Sundar Pichai himself is an avid follower of the sport, and often takes to social media to express his support for the Indian cricket team. His one particular post over Team India following their emphatic last-ball win over arch-rivals Pakistan from the 2022 T20 World Cup incidentally went viral on the microblogging site.
Nonetheless, the franchises they have shown a keen interest in, London Spirit and Oval Invincibles, both won a title each back in 2024. While the women’s team of London Spirit defeated Welsh Fire in the final to lift the women’s Hundred trophy, Oval Invincibles overcame Southern Brave to win the men’s prize.
The 2025 edition of The Hundred is slated to be played during the England’s domestic season later this year.
