Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant were included in Delhi’s squad for the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season. Shubman Gill will also be making his return to domestic cricket, as confirmed by a PCA official. In Australia, Hobart Hurricanes extended its unbeaten BBL 2024-25 run to six matches.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Tuesday, January 14.

Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant In Delhi Squad

Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant have been included in Delhi’s squad for the final two rounds of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season. It is worth noting that if Kohli finds himself in the playing XI, the occasion will mark his return to domestic cricket after a gap of 12 years.

The legendary Indian batter managed to tally just 190 runs during India’s recently-concluded five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series in Australia. Moreover, Kohli scored 100 of those runs in a single innings at the Optus Stadium in Perth during the series opener.

BCCI To Take Action Against Gambhir: Reports

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will reportedly be taking strict action against Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir if the latter fails to deliver an ideal result in the impending ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Ever since he replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach, Team India has suffered an ODI series defeat in Sri Lanka, and a 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand in home Tests. Moreover, the Indian cricket team also conceded its Border-Gavaskar Trophy title back to Australia after a gap of 10 years by losing the recently-concluded series ‘Down Under’ by a 1-3 margin.

Shubman Gill To Play Ranji Trophy: Reports

Struggling Indian batter Shubman Gill has reportedly taken Gautam Gambhir’s advice of going back to his domestic roots. As per the Hindustan Times, Gill will likely play Punjab’s upcoming Ranji Trophy 2024-25 Elite Group C match against Karnataka between January 23 and January 26. A source within the Punjab Cricket Association also confirmed that the 25-year-old will indeed be available for a match in the prestigious Indian first-class tournament.

Shubman Gill recently managed to accrue just 103 runs across five innings spanning three Tests against Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

Australia Won Low-Scoring Cracker To Seal ODI Series

Australia defeated the visiting Englishwomen by 21 runs in a low-scoring thriller to seal the three-match ODI Ashes series with a game to spare. Batting first, the Australians bundled out for just 180 in 44.3 overs, with Ellyse Perry’s swift 60 marking the lone half-century of the innings. For England, spinners Sophie Ecclestone (4-35) and Alice Capsey (3-22) collectively claimed seven wickets between them.

In response, England crashed to 159 all out despite reaching 120-5 at one stage of their run-chase. Senior spinner Alana King picked up the key wickets of Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Nat Sciver-Brunt among others to claim match-winning figures of 4-25 from 10 overs. Kim Garth jolted England’s top-order with the wickets of both openers to help Australia claim the ODI segment of the home Ashes.

Hobart Hurricanes Extend Unbeaten Streak

Hobart Hurricanes defeated Melbourne Renegades by four wickets in a thrilling last-over finish at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart in match number 34 of the BBL 2024-25 season. The outcome also extended their unbeaten run to six games, as they reclaimed the top spot on the eight-team points table.

For the Hurricanes, fast bowler Riley Meredith picked up three wickets in his four-over spell of 36 before Jacob Bethell’s 50-ball 87 catapulted the Renegades to 154-7. In response, middle-order batters Nikhil Chaudhary and Matthew Wade added impetus to Hurricanes’ run-chase with swift 36-run knocks. Tim David also muscled 24* from just 15 balls to steer Hurricanes to a clinical win with two balls to spare.
