England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has kicked off the equity sale of The Hundred franchises, aiming to attract private investment. This three-round bidding process begins today (October 18). Notably, almost all Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, except Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), are interested in purchasing stakes.
Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, who already co-owns Wrexham AFC, is reportedly eyeing the Welsh Fire team, showing his interest in expanding his sports portfolio. On the IPL front, multiple franchises are lining up for a piece of the action. The ECB had previously sent an investment prospectus to over 100 potential investors, and now things are heating up as bids roll in.
According to the Times of India, Mumbai Indians (MI) are exploring a 49% stake in either the London Spirit or the Oval Invincibles. Both teams are based in London, a city that aligns with MI’s global strategy. Although earlier reports suggested MI was targeting the London Spirit, discussions are ongoing with both teams. If the deal goes through, it would extend MI’s reach to four franchise leagues, adding to their presence in SA20 (MI Cape Town), Major League Cricket (MI New York), and ILT20 (MI Emirates).
However, RCB’s owners, United Spirits, have opted out of this opportunity, focusing solely on their commitments in the IPL and Women’s Premier League. Similarly, Torrent Group, the majority stakeholder in Gujarat Titans, is not pursuing a bid. Interestingly, CVC Capital Partners, now a minority stakeholder in the Titans, are showing interest.
SRH, RR And LSG Show Interest In Superchargers
Other IPL teams, including Delhi Capitals (DC), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), are actively participating in the bidding process. The GMR Group, co-owners of DC, recently acquired a majority stake in Hampshire and aim to buy the Southern Brave team. This aligns with their existing investments, which include ownership of the South Bowl Ground, a Hilton hotel, and a golf course.
Meanwhile, SRH, RR, and LSG have shown interest in the Northern Superchargers. LSG had also previously explored acquiring the Manchester Originals, suggesting they might target one of these teams in the current bidding round.
