On this day in 2023, Australia swatted aside India by six wickets in front of a packed Ahmedabad crowd to lift the ODI World Cup trophy for a record sixth time in the history of cricket. Travis Head was the hero of the final for Australia, as he shattered India's World Cup dream with a belligerent hundred.

India vs Australia 2023 World Cup Final: As It Panned Out

India manage 240, thanks to valiant knocks from Rohit, Kohli

After winning the toss, Australian captain Pat Cummins decided to bowl on what supposed to be a dryish pitch at Narendra Modi Stadium. The visitors had a superb start with the ball, as Mitchell Starc sent Shubman Gill packing for a low score.

However, Gill's dismissal had little impact on captain Rohit Sharma, who hammered the Australian bowlers to all parts of the ground. Although Rohit looked sublime for his quick-fire 31-ball 47, Glenn Maxwell dismissed him at a crucial juncture to bring Australia back into the contest.

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul tried to steady the ship for India, but the former's dismissal for a glorious 63-ball 54 again tilted the game in the Aussies' favour. Once Pat Cummins got Kohli's prized scalp, there was no looking back for Australia, with the visitors jolting India with frequent setbacks.

KL Rahul scored a sloth-paced 107-ball 66, while the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja had no answer to Australia's rampant bowling attack. Thus, the Aussies' disciplined bowling and fielding helped them restrict India to 240, what seemed defendable on that sluggish surface.

Travis Head Stuns India With His Fireworks

In response, India attacked with the ball from the word go, as Jasprit Bumrah kept the Australian batters on their toes. They managed the early breakthroughs of David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith; however, Australia kept scoring at a brisk rate despite losing three wickets.

With dew coming in, the black-soil wicket in Ahmedabad behaved like a belter in the second half. Having said that, Travis Head deserved massive applause for his breathtaking knock that proved to be the deciding factor in the all-important game.

The explosive southpaw struck 137 runs off 120 deliveries with the help of 15 boundaries and four sixes. His prolific performance led Australia to another World Cup glory, with Pat Cummins joining the illustrious list of captains who have won the coveted trophy.
