It was one of those unforgettable nights in Bengaluru. On this day last year, KL Rahul smashed his way into the record books as he set the M Chinnaswamy Stadium alight with the fastest century by an Indian in a World Cup. The right-hander reached his hundred off just 62 balls against the Netherlands and broke Rohit Sharma’s record, who had set the bar with a 63-ball ton against Afghanistan just a few days earlier in the same tournament.

KL Rahul’s Record-Breaking World Cup Century Lit Up Diwali

With Diwali celebrations underway, KL Rahul and the Indian team put on a show for the ages by posting a massive score of 410/4 – India’s second-highest total in World Cup history.

After Rohit, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli set the stage with half-centuries, it was Shreyas Iyer (128*), who anchored the innings, and Rahul (102 off 64 balls with 11 fours and four sixes), who brought the fireworks. The duo smashed a record 208-run partnership for the fourth wicket, taking the game away from the Netherlands.

The Dutch Tried, But India’s Bowlers Were in Control

The Netherlands needed a record-breaking chase to stand a chance but the odds were stacked against them. Their batters gave it a decent shot with players like Max O’Dowd (30), Colin Ackermann (35), Sybrand Engelbrecht (45), and Teja Nidamanuru (54) making useful contributions.

But India’s bowlers, led by a Mohammed Siraj, who shook off a throat injury, made sure they had the last laugh. Siraj grabbed 2/29 and he was ably supported by Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja, who each took two wickets to bundle out the Dutch for 250 in 47.5 overs.

Rahul’s Highs and Lows

Since that blistering knock, Rahul’s journey has had its fair share of ups and downs. His recent outings with India A against Australia A haven’t been his best, and he’s been struggling to find his rhythm.

While the runs may not be flowing as smoothly on the field, there’s reason to celebrate off it for the cricketer. Rahul and his wife, Athiya Shetty, recently announced that they’re expecting their first child in 2025.

So, as fans relive Rahul’s record-breaking innings from a year ago, they are sure to be reminded of his match-winning potential and will hope to see him rediscover that form soon.
