The World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa is set to be an exciting battle at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. This is the first time in three years these two teams will face off in Test whites.
South Africa will be playing in their first-ever WTC final, while Australia are the defending champions, having beaten India in the last edition. South Africa have been in great form recently, reaching the semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup, and another semi-final in the Champions Trophy.
They had a shaky start to their WTC journey, drawing with India at home and losing 2-0 to New Zealand. But then, they bounced back strongly with wins over West Indies, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. They topped the WTC standings with seven straight wins, but critics argue they had a softer schedule since they didn’t play Australia or England.
On other hand, Australia led by Pat Cummins won a 3-1 series against India and went unbeaten in all six series of the WTC cycle. Out of 19 Tests, they won 13. However, they faced a small hiccup in preparation as they were not allowed to train at Lord’s one day before the final.
So, What If the Match Ends In A Tie, Draw Or Gets Washed Out?
In Test cricket, a win, loss, or draw are all possible. So, here’s what happens if the WTC Final doesn’t have a clear winner:
If the match is drawn, tied, or abandoned due to rain, Australia and SA will share the WTC trophy. However, there is a reserve day (Day 6) to help complete the match only if time was lost due to bad weather in the first five days. If no time is lost or if the lost time is made up within five days, then the reserve day will not be used.
It is important to note that even after using the reserve day there’s still no result, then again, the trophy will be shared.
Since London’s weather is unpredictable, this rule could play a big role. Both teams will be aware of the situation and may change their tactics depending on how the match unfolds.
