'We are generally the enemy': Glenn Maxwell pleased with the love shown by Sri Lankan fans

The five-match One-Day series between Sri Lanka and Australia concluded on Friday. The Aussies won the last One Day International by four wickets. However, the victory didn't matter as they ended up on the wrong side, losing the series 2-3.

Though the ODI series didn't go as per the plan for the Men in Yellow, they will be taking a bunch of memorable memories back home. It was a delightful sight at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo as the fans showed up in the Yellow jersey in the stadium during the final match.

Following the conclusion of the last One-Day International and the series, the Australian players were greeted with the sight of Sri Lanka fans holding Australia flags and thank-you signs. The fans also gave a standing ovation to the touring side for their visit to the island nation in a time of distress.

Sri Lanka are going through a massive economic crisis, and the Australia tour came as a much-needed breath of fresh air for the locals. Australia's decorated all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was quite amazed seeing the support for his team in the foreign land. Maxwell described the experience as extraordinary and unforgettable.

"That was pretty extraordinary. I was just saying to the boys that was one of the most special feelings. Being able to walk around the ground and have a foreign country cheer for you.

"A lot of times when Australia tours we are generally the enemy and there's not too many Australian fans in the stands. But having the support and fans here at the moment is truly extraordinary.

"Everyone's wearing yellow. They've got all the Australian flags all over the place. It's extremely special and it's a credit to everyone that's been able to get out here. It's been such a tough time obviously for the locals. For them to come out and support us, hopefully, both teams can entertain them and they've had a really good time during the one-day series," Glenn Maxwell in the video shared on the official Twitter handle of cricket.com.au.

Meanwhile, the tour to Sri Lanka is going to be much more memorable for Maxwell. The all-rounder has received a call-up to the Australian Test team for the first time since 2017. He is expected to star in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka that will commence on June 29 at the Galle International Stadium.
