The ICC World Cup 2023 got off to an electrifying start for India, with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul delivering a stellar partnership that propelled them to a six-wicket victory over Australia in their opening game on Sunday, held at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

After weathering an early scare, India managed to chase down the target of 200 runs in 41.2 overs, courtesy of KL Rahul's unbeaten 97 and Virat Kohli's 85

India's chase of 200 runs got off to a dramatic start as they found themselves reeling at 2 for 3 within just two overs. Ishan Kishan, making his World Cup debut while filling in for Shubman Gill, was out for a golden duck.

Rohit Sharma, a stalwart in one-day cricket, suffered the same fate, also departing without scoring any runs. Shreyas Iyer, in his first World Cup appearance, faced a nightmarish beginning for Team India, getting dismissed for a three-ball duck.

The pressure was squarely on Virat Kohli and KL Rahul now. The former India captain, meanwhile was a bit shaky early on, and he got a real stroke of luck when Mitchel Marsh butterfingered a catch after Kohli mistimed a pull shot off Josh Hazlewood in the 8th over.

Over at the other crease, KL Rahul was in an absolutely dazzling form, gradually taking the weight off Kohli's shoulders. Towards the end, KL Rahul wrapped up the game in style, smashing a massive six to extra cover off Pat Cummins.

Following the game, in the post-match dressing room ceremony and as part of India's victorious celebration, the team decided to honour the best fielder of the match. The prestigious medal was awarded to Virat Kohli for his outstanding diving catch of Mitchell Marsh off Jasprit Bumrah's delivery.
