Things seem to go south for Sri Lanka in the ongoing World Cup 2023 after their loss to South Africa, where they conceded 428 runs and lost the match by a massive margin of 102 runs. After the game, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced a fine of 10% match fees on the players for not completing their overs in time.

The match that took place in Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium saw runs getting scored easily with shorter boundaries and flat pitch in play. However, the repercussion was that the Asian side fell two overs short of the required target overs that needed to be bowled at that stage after all the time allowances were taken into consideration.

ICC match referee Javagal Srinath announced the verdict, which remained unchallenged from the Sri Lankan camp as skipper Dasun Shanaka accepted the sanction, which meant that there was no need for a formal hearing.

As per ICC's Article 2.22, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, each player will be fined 5% of the match fees for every over bowled after the time limit, and as in this case, Sri Lanka were two short.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Shahid Saikat, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Alex Wharf.

The match saw three of the Proteas batters, Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram, notching their respective tons, which proved to be too good for the Lankans. In reply, they could only manage 326, which is generally a decent total, but not on that day.

After this, Sri Lanka will next go on and play against Pakistan on 10th October in Hyderabad in a bid to turn their fortunes.
