Australian pacer, Spencer Johnson etched his name in history books on Wednesday with a jaw-dropping performance for Oval Invincibles in The Hundred 2023 Men’s tournament.

Aussie prodigy Johnson unleashes historic bowling masterclass

The young pace sensation recorded figures of 3-1 in a 20-ball spell left spectators and pundits in awe, setting the benchmark for economical bowling in the tournament.

As the Invincibles squared off against Manchester Originals, setting a colossal target of 187, it was Johnson who turned the game on its head. He unfurled a barrage of 19 dot balls, shackling the likes of the Original openers Jos Buttler and Phil Salt, and allowing a paltry single run in his first spell.

Later in the match, the southpaw came back for his second spell, snaring three wickets (Usama Mir, Tom Hartley & Joshua Little) without giving away a single run.

This magnificent performance broke the record for the most economical spell in The Hundred’s history created by Mujeeb ur Rahman, who had given away six runs in his 20 balls.

The cricketing fraternity was buzzed with admiration, with fans and experts alike taking to social media to hail Johnson's feat. For someone who made a late debut in the Big Bash and Sheffield Shield at 27, the left-arm quick’s rise in the cricketing circuit has been nothing short of meteoric.

While Johnson stole the limelight, South African stumper, Heinrich Klaasen added his own touch of brilliance. With a blistering 60 off 27 deliveries, including six maximums, Klaasen set the foundation for the Invincibles' massive total. English stalwart, Jason Roy also contributed with a dashing 59 off 42.

Facing such a combined onslaught, Manchester Originals found themselves overwhelmed. Falling significantly short, they managed to score just 92 runs, ensuring a comprehensive 94-run victory for the Invincibles.

Notably, to round off his week of stellar achievements, Johnson recently earned a place in Australia's T20I squad for the tour of South Africa. As the cricket world now casts an expectant eye on this emerging superstar, Johnson's future outings on the international stage are awaited eagerly.
