The famous best fielder award has made a comeback in the T20 World Cup as Mohammed Siraj happened to be the first one to get the recognition for his valiant efforts against Ireland. And the award was presented by a special guest as well.

India crushed Ireland in their first league game of the 2024 World Cup held yesterday at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

The conditions were once again nightmarish for batters as Ireland struggled on a pitch having uneven bounce.

Meanwhile, the Indian pace attack thrived under favourable conditions to restrict Ireland to a lowly score of 96. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya did most of the work by scalping 5 wickets combined.

On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj was also clinical in his 3-over spell as he allowed just 13 runs whilst removing dangerous batter George Dockrell.

However, Siraj’s impressive efforts in the field didn’t not go unnoticed as he was awarded the fielder of the match award by Indian fielding coach T Dilip.

The trend of putting more emphasis on fielding began in ICC ODI World Cup in 2023 and now perpetuated in the T20 World Cup as well.

Siraj removed set batter Gareth Delany with an accurate throw in the 16th over, for which he bagged the fielding medal. And this time, the Indian dressing room welcomed a young fan to do the honours.

A young kid, who wanted to meet Arshdeep Singh and Virat Kohli, was called up after the game in the dressing room by Indian management to be a part of something special and make memories he will cherish for the rest of his life.
