India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma, fresh off his T20 World Cup win, received a heartfelt welcome from Sri Lankan veteran Angelo Mathews upon his arrival in Colombo for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.

The much-anticipated series, set to begin on August 2, follows a successful T20I series where a Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian team has clinched the series 2-0 against the hosts with a game to go.

Rohit Sharma, who recently led India to their first ICC trophy in over a decade with the T20 World Cup 2024 victory, was greeted at the training grounds by Angelo Mathews. A video capturing Mathews embracing and congratulating Rohit has since gone viral.

It is worth mentioning that this series marks a significant return for Rohit, as it will be his first ODI appearance since the heart-wrenching loss to Australia in the World Cup 2023 final on November 19, last year.

Since that defeat, Rohit has focused on T20 and Test cricket, stepping away from the 50-over format to recalibrate. His return to ODIs is not just a personal comeback but a crucial step for India as they begin preparations for the Champions Trophy scheduled early next year.

The Indian skipper's return is highly anticipated which reflects his renewed focus and the strategic importance of the ODI series in building towards future tournaments.

The three-match ODI series will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo with the three ODIs taking place on August 2, 4 & 7 respectively.
