A moment of cricketing peculiarity unfolded during Match 4 of Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 on Sunday as San Francisco Unicorns' opener, Finn Allen was involved in a bizarre run out as his bat lodged in the pitch while taking a single during their match against Seattle Orcas.

Finn Allen left short as bat sticks in turf

The incident occurred in the fourth over of the Unicorns' chase of 178 runs. Allen, who was cruising at 28 from 9 balls, faced a slower delivery from Cameron Gannon which he nudged to mid-wicket. The ball was a fair distance from fielder Shehan Jayasuriya, leading Allen to casually amble towards the other end.

Alert to the situation, Jayasuriya quickly collect the ball and hurled it towards the non-striker's end. Allen was within striking distance of the crease but met an unexpected hurdle when his bat became wedged in the pitch, subsequently slipping from his hand and leaving him short of his ground.

This unfortunate turn of events triggered a domino effect in the Unicorns' batting order after they had been set a competitive target of 178 in 20 overs courtesy of Heinrich Klaasen’s 53 off 31 balls and Shimron Hetmyer’s 36 off 30 balls.

The Kiwi batter's abrupt exit marked the Unicorns' first wicket down at a score of 42. Following Allen's wicket, the Unicorns' batting line-up crumbled. Imad Wasim took out Matthew Wade (28) and Marcus Stoinis (15), while Harmeet Singh dismissed Aaron Finch for 14.

The Seattle Orcas' pace attack, led by Cameron Gannon and Andrew Tye mopped up the tailenders as the duo shared six wickets amongst themselves. The Unicorns were eventually bowled out for 142 as the Orcas’ won the game by 35 to secure a second consecutive win.

Meanwhile, this marked a successive underwhelming performance for Allen, following a modest 10-run knock off five balls against MI New York in the Unicorns' opening game of the tournament.
