Tomorrow's IPL match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at RCB's home ground, the Chinnaswamy Stadium, promises to be the most thrilling encounter of the group stage.

Both teams have their eyes set on the playoffs. In their previous encounter at Chepauk in inaugural match of IPL 2024, CSK comfortably defeated RCB.

However, rain is predicted for tomorrow's match, raising concerns especially for RCB fans. CSK would qualify for the playoffs even if rain ruins the whole game and points are shared. But that's not the case for RCB.

Thankfully, RCB fans can take comfort in knowing that the Chinnaswamy Stadium boasts one of the world's best drainage systems, potentially the best in the country.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has upgraded the Chinnaswamy Stadium with a SubAir system. This system requires sand as the main base of the ground.

Therefore, the traditional red soil at the famous Chinnaswamy ground was replaced with sand to ensure the drainage infrastructure functions effectively.

"If you take regular soil and water, it will swell and become a lump, which does not happen with sand. The drainage system takes the water out, but in other kinds of soil, the surface moisture is retained. Sand, on the other hand, does not hold water. It (SubAir syetem) allows water to percolate, which means the outfield is less slippery and injury risks are minimised. Sand is expensive, and you need to be very good with maintenance, especially in cool climates like Bangalore, where fungal infection is something to look out for," -says P.R. Viswanathan, the BCCI's South Zone curator.

Working of SubAir System

In Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, a 200-horsepower machine manages the water evacuation facility. This powerful machine can drain an impressive 10,000 litres of water per minute, aiding in quickly preparing the outfield for play, even following a heavy rainfall.

Hence we can expect a game even if rain takes a few overs.
