The third Test between India and England is underway at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. The likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer aren’t part of the playing XI.

In their absence, youngsters such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rajat Padidar failed to come good. Amidst this, Cheteshwar Pujara, who has been out of favour for quite some time, was seen practicing at the nets for the upcoming Ranji game at the same venue.

Pujara is playing for the Saurashtra team in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season. He began the season by scoring his 17th first-class double century and went on to pile on runs consistently. Pujara has managed to score 673 runs in six matches at an average of 74.78, including two centuries and two half-centuries.

Pujara’s remarkable run in the ongoing Ranji season keeps him in contention for Tests. Although, selectors are keen to give opportunities to young players. The 36-year-old, however, is still fighting for his comeback, believing that he still has a lot to prove.

“There have been ups and downs in the last few years and it tests you as a player. I still have a lot to prove. This (making a comeback) is a different type of challenge. I know that the kind of contributions I have made to Indian, I still have a lot to contribute,” Pujara had said, earlier, in a podcast.

Rohit Sharma leads India’s fightback after losing three wickets

India didn’t make a great start with the bat after winning the toss and opting to bat first on day 1 of the third Test match. Yashasvi Jaiswal got out early 10, while Gill (0) followed him one over, later.

Rajat Patidar (5) got out off Tom Hartley against the run of play to leave India in all sorts of trouble at 33 for 3. However, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja have led remarkable recovery, since.

The duo put on a 173-run partnership for the third wicket to bring India back into the game. Notably, this is the first time that India have produced a 100-run partnership for any wicket in the ongoing series. Rohit Sharma (114*) smashed a pleasing ton, while Jadeja is unbeaten on 72.

At the time of writing, India have managed to compile 207 for 3 in 59 overs.
