To the joy of countless Indian fans, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed at an event in Rajkot on Wednesday that Rohit Sharma will lead India in the upcoming T20 World Cup. As soon as Shah confirmed this news, the all-format Indian skipper was visibly happy. The marquee event will be held in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA) in the month of June.

After India's early exit from the T20 World Cup 2022, Rohit didn't feature in T20Is for 14 months, sparking speculation about his future in the shortest format. During his absence, Hardik Pandya took over the T20I captaincy after leading his former IPL team, the Gujarat Titans, to victory in 2022. Rohit's focus was primarily on Tests and ODIs, with crucial events like the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the ODI World Cup on the horizon. T20Is seemed insignificant during this period, leading to rumors of Pandya assuming permanent leadership.

However, Shah's announcement laid to rest all speculations, reassuring Rohit supporters uncertain about his T20I future.

During an event hosted by the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA), Shah, along with head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, seamer Mohammed Siraj, all-rounder Axar Patel, members of the coaching staff, and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, emphasized India's recent success. Shah said that under Rohit's leadership, India would break their ICC trophy drought at the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados.

“I want to promise you that we’ll lift the trophy in Barbados at the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy), said Jay Shah during the event.

Shah also confirmed that Pandya would serve as Rohit's deputy, highlighting his crucial role in the team's leadership group. Shah praised Rohit's leadership skills and cited instances where Rohit's captaincy turned matches in India's favor, particularly during the third T20I against Afghanistan.

“Hardik Pandya will definitely be the vice-captain. When Hardik was injured in the World Cup, who else can we give the captaincy? In the third T20I against Afghanistan, India were 22/4 and the way Rohit Sharma took the team to 212/4, we can’t question much about him, right? He has the ability, as I said, we won ten games in the ODI World Cup. We didn’t win the final, but it’s part and parcel of the game. Whoever plays better, wins,”  added Shah.

These revelations during the event came as a surprise to many. In the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma's India is placed in Group A alongside Ireland, Pakistan, the United States of America (USA), and Canada. The 2007 T20 World Cup champions will kick off their campaign against Ireland in New York on June 5.
