Even before the retention lists came out, considerable speculation surrounding Rishabh Pant's future with the Delhi Capitals (DC) was unsure. However, as revealed, the Delhi-based franchise did not retain the Indian stunner; instead, their top retentions were Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs and Abishek Porel.
A lot of discussions took place regarding why the franchise took this decision made this decision. Numerous reports hinted at a possible discord between Rishabh Pant and JSW owner Parth Jindal since he wanted Pant to be a pure wicket-keeper batter instead of a captain. While there was no official information on the aptness of these claims, Rishabh Pant, currently practicing hard in Australia for the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy, has broken his silence on the entire fiasco.
In a recent interview with StarSports, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar talked about Pant and his potential return to the Delhi team. In the video, Gavaskar said that money plays a significant role in the retention process and claimed there may have been some disagreement over the fees between the two parties. He also said that DC might bid for him in the upcoming IPL 2024 Auctions.
Gavaskar Believes Money However Pant Claps Back
"Delhi would certainly want Rishabh Pant back in the squad. Sometimes when a player is to be retained, there is talk between the player and franchise about the fees that is expected. As you can see, some of the players who have been retained by the franchise, they've gone for more than what the No. 1 retention fee would've been. Maybe there was some disagreement over there (fees). My feeling is Delhi would definitely want Pant back because they need a captain as well. If Rishabh Pant is not in their squad then they have to look for a new captain," he added.
Reacting to the video, Pant made a comment on the post and said his departure from the franchise wasn't about money.
"My retention wasn't about the money for sure that I can say," Rishabh Pant said in his reply to the post on X, formerly Twitter.
Currently, all the fanfare surrounds Rishabh Pant, with key teams like Chennai Super Kings rumoured to be the front-runners to bid for the ex-DC skipper.
