Sunil Gavaskar on Shreyas Iyer [Source: @IPLnCricket/X.com]
The India Premier League (IPL) buzz is in full swing, with the mega auction 2025 set to take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A total of 574 players are up for grabs, and legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has sparked fresh excitement with his thoughts on Shreyas Iyer’s future.
Gavaskar believes Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), fresh off their IPL 2024 victory, will make a bid to bring back their title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer. However, with a limited purse of ₹51 crores and no Right to Match (RTM) card, KKR faces a tricky situation.
"When KKR won last year (IPL 2024), Shreyas Iyer was the captain. As I said earlier for Rishabh Pant as well, at times, there could be a disagreement on the fees," Gavaskar said.
Iyer has set his base price at ₹2 crores. While his performance last season was solid, scoring 351 runs in 14 innings at an average of 39 with a strike rate of 146.86, KKR might hesitate if the bidding war escalates.
"However, I also feel once Shreyas Iyer comes into the auction, KKR might also bid for his services. If KKR don't bid, I feel Delhi will do that," Gavaskar added.
With limited funds left, KKR’s strategy will be closely watched during the auction.
Gavaskar Believes DC Might Use RTM Card For Rishabh Pant
Gavaskar also suggested that DC might aim to re-sign Shreyas Iyer or use their RTM card for Rishabh Pant. Pant, who returned to cricket after a long layoff due to a car accident, was instrumental for DC last season. He scored 446 runs in 13 innings, averaging over 40, with three half-centuries.
"Delhi will want him because they will also need to find a captain if Rishabh Pant isn't in their team. So I feel Delhi will definitely try to use the RTM card or bring Rishabh Pant back into their team at the auction," he said.
DC narrowly missed the playoffs last season due to net run rate. Securing a strong leader like Rishabh Pant or Shreyas Iyer could be key to their resurgence.
