Wasim Jaffer Uses Bumrah’s Example To Take Jibe At England For Supporting Israel

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer took a subtle dig at the government of the United Kingdom (UK) for supporting Israel in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.

On October 7, militants launched a barrage of rockets at Israel, and simultaneously, hundreds of gunmen infiltrated the Gaza Strip, taking numerous innocents hostage.

In response, Israel retaliated against Palestine, leading to a deterioration of the situation each day. The Israeli government implemented a comprehensive blockade on Gaza, as confirmed by the defense minister. This blockade encompasses restrictions on the admission of essential resources such as food, electricity, and fuel.

Several countries, including India, the USA, Australia, France, and the UK, support Israel in the conflict. The ongoing state of conflict between Israel and Gaza has created divisions worldwide, with diverse perspectives on the matter.

Wasim Jaffer, the batting coach of the Bangladesh U19 team's Asia Cup, cited an example of Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery spell in the ongoing first Test match between India and England at the Rajiv Gandhi International cricket stadium in Hyderabad to take a jibe at the Britishers for supporting Israel.

Popularly known for candid opinions and sarcastic tweets, Jaffer took to his ‘X’ handle and wrote:

“They can play Jerusalem, but they cannot play Jasprit!”

Pope leads England's fightback

After bowling India out early on Day 3, England made a fine start to their second innings with the bat as openers Zak Crawley (31) and Ben Duckett (47) batted positively. However, both batters threw away their starts. While Crawley was outfoxed by Ravichandran Ashwin, Duckett, after surviving an LBW appeal, was bowled by Bumrah.

Soon after, England's most reliable batter Joe Root was trapped in front of the wicket by Bumrah’s incoming delivery. Wickets in quick succession by Bumrah shifted the momentum in India's favor.

Jaffer was impressed with the way Bumrah bowled, and that also allowed him to indirectly criticize the UK government.

At stumps on Day 3, the visitors were 316/6 in their second innings as they led by 126 runs, with Ollie Pope being the savior of the team, remaining unbeaten on 148 off 208 balls. After the middle-order crumbled once again, Pope stitched a partnership of 112 runs for the sixth wicket with Ben Foakes. The latter was undone by Axar Patel.

After this, Rehan Ahmed and Pope have set up a partnership of 40 runs and are unbeaten at stumps. The last two partnerships have made sure that England has now denied India a three-day innings victory.
