Who Is Responsible For Pakistan Cricket's Poor Performance? New PCB Chairman Reacts

The interim chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Shah Khawar, dismissed claims that the frequent changes in the board's leadership were responsible for the Pakistan men's cricket team's poor on-field performances in the recent times.

Addressing the media in Lahore on Friday, Khawar acknowledged that the team's subpar performance could be attributed to various factors but refuted the notion that the recent change in PCB leadership was a significant factor.

The Men in Green suffered a whitewash in the three-match Test series against Australia and suffered a 1-4 defeat in the T20I series against New Zealand. The newly appointed captains, Shan Masood and Shaheen Afridi, had a challenging start after Babar Azam's resignation as the all-format captain last year.

Whether in Test, ODI, or T20I, the Pakistan team has struggled to secure victories since the World Cup debacle. Some reports have suggested that the extensive changes in leadership, management, and within the PCB are responsible for Pakistan's series of losses.

However, Shah Khawar, the new chief of the PCB, disagreed with this perspective. He asserted that the board operates independently and functions as such. He expressed confidence that normalcy would be restored once the new board of governors is formed. Khawar also emphasized that the Pakistan government did not interfere in the affairs of the cricket board.

"I don't think changes in the board in the last year have affected the team. It might be a minor reason, but there are other factors, and once the new board of governors is formed, and the new chairman takes charge, they will look into this," clarified Shah Khawar in the press-conference.

An Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Election Commissioner of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Shah Khawar assumed the powers of Chairman of PCB on Wednesday.

According to the notification dated January 23, 2024, from the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ministry and by virtue of Article 7(2) of the PCB Constitution, the Election Commissioner is vested with the powers of Chairman PCB. Khawar's appointment as interim chairman followed PCB Management Committee chairman Zaka Ashraf stepping down from his post on January 19.
