In the latest developments around Punjab cricket, former India opener Wasim Jaffer has been roped in as Punjab head coach.

On Saturday, August 3, the Punjab Cricket Association confirmed that the 46-year-old will coach the Punjab side for the upcoming domestic season.

PCA president Amarjeet Singh Mehta confirmed the appointment of former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer. Meanwhile, Khelnow reported that Jaffer was chosen as Punjab head coach unanimously over former Australia speedster Shaun Tait, who had also applied for the position.

“Our main aim is to win the Ranji Trophy and also Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, so we unanimously decided to appoint him as the head coach. With his experience and expertise, we are confident that Jaffer will motivate the team to achieve success. He is one of the best longer format players in the country, and we did not want to miss out on the opportunity of having him on board,” PCA president Amarjeet Singh Mehta told Sportstar.

Jaffer has previously served as the head coach of Uttarakhand and Odisha. However, he had to step down as Uttarakhand's head coach in a controversial manner after he was alleged favouritism and religious bias in his team selection.

Jaffer has also been associated with Punjab Kings as their mentor and batting coach in the past. He was also rumoured to be appointed as Punjab Kings' head coach.
