In a significant development, prominent Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has joined reputed English cricket club Hampshire for their final two County Championship matches of the ongoing season. Sundar, who is not a part of India's Asia Cup squad, is expected to link-up with his Hampshire teammates soon.
Washington Sundar Bags County Deal After Tilak, Gaikwad
It's worth mentioning that several marquee Indian players were signed by the English teams ahead of the current County Championship season. While Ruturaj Gaikwad pulled out of his deal with Yorkshire, Tilak Varma represented Hampshire during his brief English County stint.
Hampshire's director of cricket Giles White reckoned that Sundar could be a valuable asset for the team against formidable sides like Somerset and Surrey, considering he performed admirably on India's recent Test tour of England.
"We're delighted to bring Washington to the club for the County Championship. He had an excellent series against England this summer and he'll play a key role with two big games coming up against Somerset and Surrey," White was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
Interestingly, Washington Sundar has participated in the premier English domestic competition in the past. He was a part of the Lancashire setup for the 2022 County Championship as well as the One-Day Cup.
After Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement, Sundar has emerged as India's primary batting all-rounder alongside the veteran Ravindra Jadeja in Test cricket. Hailed for his grit and watertight technique, Sundar has represented India in 13 Test matches with prolific success, amassing 752 runs at an average of 44.2. He has also bagged 32 wickets, including three four-fers and a solitary five-wicket haul, at an average of 28.5 and a healthy strike rate of 50.6.
Sundar was one of India's most impressive performers in the England series, scoring 284 runs, including a ton, and scalping seven wickets across four games.
