WADA or otherwise known as the World Anti-Doping Agency recently revealed that India has not conducted enough dope tests on the nation's athletes in the year 2021 as well as 2022.

The data obtained disclosed that out of the 25 male players under contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), 12 players did not undergo any testing by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).

The list included names of cricketers such as Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Arshdeep Singh, Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Sanju Samson, Srikar Bharat, and Washington Sundar and highlighted that they have not been subjected to doping tests by NADA.

In August 2019, the government assumed control over the regulation of doping in cricket through the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). At that time, government officials announced that all cricketers would be subjected to testing by NADA, emphasizing that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would be treated like any other sports federation.

This marked the conclusion of the BCCI's long-standing resistance to the government's authority in this matter.

According to information obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) Act of 2005 by The Indian Express, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) conducted a total of 5,961 tests in the years 2021 and 2022 combined. Out of these tests, only 114 were conducted on cricketers, while athletics had the highest number of tests with 1,717 in total.

During this two-year period, Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian Test cricket team, underwent the most testing among Indian cricketers, with six visits from dope control officers. On the other hand, several players including Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, and Cheteshwar Pujara were tested only once.

Doping control serves as a crucial measure employed by Anti-Doping Organizations (ADOs) to ensure fairness in sports and safeguard the integrity of clean competition. Athletes participating at the national or international level are obligated to undergo doping control and may be subjected to testing at any given time or location. It is essential for athletes to pass this test in order to be declared fit to play.
