Team India cruised to a comfortable win over England in the first ODI match in Nagpur. Australian bowlers conjured yet another commanding performance over hosts Sri Lanka, and Marcus Stoinis shocked the cricketing fraternity by announcing his retirement mere days prior to the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Thursday, February 6.

Shubman Gill Steers India To 1-0 Lead Over England

Team India outplayed the visiting Englishman in the first ODI of their three-match series. Making his ODI debut, fast bowler Harshit Rana picked up the prized scalps of Ben Duckett, Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone to claim impressive figures of 3-53. Senior spinner Ravindra Jadeja also picked up three wickets as England folded up for just 248 in 47.4 overs.

Chasing 249, India lost both openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the innings. Shubman Gill at number three counterattacked for the hosts by making 87 from 96 balls, and the cricketer shared match-defining partnerships with fellow half-centurions Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel as the ‘Men in Blue’ cruised to a four-wicket win to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc Pummel Sri Lanka On Day 1

Australian spinner Nathan Lyon and legendary fast bowler Mitchell Starc picked up three wickets each on Day 1 of the series-deciding second Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle. For the hosts, number three batter Dinesh Chandimal and wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis composed fighting half-centuries, with the latter remaining unbeaten at 59* till stumps.

Playing his final match, seasoned opener Dimuth Karunaratne made 36 before getting knocked over by Lyon mere moments into the post-lunch session. Sri Lanka eventually reached 229-9 at the end of Day 1, with Mendis batting at the crease alongside number 11 Lahiru Kumara.

Virat Kohli Missed England ODI Due To An Injury

In a rare occurrence, legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli had to sit out of India’s first ODI match against England due to an injury. At the toss, captain Rohit Sharma explained that Kohli was suffering with a ‘knee problem on his right leg’.

Kohli’s absence prompted the Indian team management to call up Shreyas Iyer as number four batter. In return, Iyer scored a sublime 59 from just 36 balls to make the most of his newfound opportunity just before the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
