Following Hanuma Vihari’s high-profile move, another established Indian cricketer appears set to head to the North-East. Veteran all-rounder and 2019 World Cup player Vijay Shankar is likely to join Tripura for the upcoming domestic season, having already secured a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association.
The 34-year-old, who has represented India in 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is, would significantly bolster the Tripura side, which is also expected to be captained by Vihari across all elite-division formats.
Shankar Confirms Receiving NOC
Speaking to Cricbuzz on Tuesday, Vijay Shankar revealed that he has already obtained the NOC from Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and will officially announce the switch after getting formally appointed for Tripura.
"I have obtained the NOC from TNCA but am yet to receive confirmation from the Tripura Cricket Association. I will be able to officially announce my switch once I get the formal approval letter from Tripura," Shankar said.
A Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) official later confirmed the development, stating that Vijay Shankar will indeed join as a professional for the season.
Domestic Veteran And CSK Star Set To Lit Up Tripura
Shankar brings a wealth of experience, having begun his first-class career with Tamil Nadu back in 2012. In 58 Ranji Trophy matches, he has amassed 3,142 runs at an impressive average of 44.25, including 11 centuries.
Notably, Shankar is also a great asset for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL too. The veteran debuted with CSK back in 2014 and even secured a stint in the 2025 edition, where he played 6 matches to score 118 runs at an average of 39.33 and a strike rate of 129.67. His overall IPL career stats display 78 matches where he boasts 1233 runs.
Nevertheless, for Tripura, this double acquisition marks a significant ambition to become a more competitive force in the domestic circuit, adding proven talent and leadership to their ranks.
