In a major development ahead of the new domestic season, Indian Test cricketer Hanuma Vihari has decided to part ways with the Andhra Cricket Association. The 31-year-old batter, who has represented India in 16 Tests, has officially requested a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to join another state team.

Strong indications point to Tripura as his next destination, where he is expected not only to play but also to lead the team across formats in the Elite division. "I have been thinking about a switch. Tripura has been asking me for some time," Vihari confirmed to Cricbuzz.

Vihari To Play For Tripura After Controversial Andhra Stint

Confirming Vihari's arrival, a Tripura Cricket Association official, Tapan Lodh, acknowledged the move of the cricketer, stating, “We have recommended to the association a few names to sign as professionals. I cannot disclose the names but I know we are signing Vihari.”

This decision comes after a controversial stint with Andhra earlier in 2024, when Vihari alleged political interference in team selection. During the Ranji Trophy season, he publicly claimed that a politician’s son was favoured over deserving players and announced he would never play for Andhra again due to humiliation and bias.

The issue sparked a political storm in the state, with opposition leaders targeting the ruling party for mishandling the matter. However, after the change in government with the TDP returning to power, Vihari initially had a change of heart and decided to stay back, even expressing willingness to lead Andhra again.

Vihari Determined To Begin Fresh Chapter

Now, with his latest request for an NOC, Vihari appears determined to begin a fresh chapter with Tripura. The right-hander has an impressive first-class record, having scored over 6,000 runs.

He started his career with Hyderabad, where he amassed 3,155 runs at an average of 57.38, before two separate stints with Andhra. Known for his resilience, Hanuma Vihari famously batted with a fractured wrist during a Ranji Trophy quarter-final, cementing his reputation as a gritty team man.
