It has been a recording shattering Tour of South Africa for India's Varun Chakravarthy, who has spun his magic against the Proteas. From taking his maiden fifer in T20 Internationals to now achieving another historic feat by scalping most wickets for India in a bilateral men's T20I series, Chakravarthy is on a dream run.
The right-arm leg break bowler achieved this milestone during the third T20I against Aiden Markram and co at SuperSport Park in Centurion. Chakravarthy faced a challenging situation, giving away 23 runs. However, he regained his composure and made two vital breakthroughs, dismissing Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks.
Chakravarthy Surpasses Ashwin
It was his dismissal of Markram that proved to be particularly significant, as he became the first Indian with 10 or more wickets in a bilateral T20I series. With this feat, he surpassed off-spinner Ashwin and wrist-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, each of whom have nine wickets in this regard.
Indian Spinner Joins Elite List
Varun Chakravarthy's excellent run against South Africa has also got him into an elite list of 16 spinners who had taken ten or more wickets in a bilateral T20I series. Ten wickets from 16 deliveries at an economy rate of eight have made him sit alongside Ish Sodhi (New Zealand), Rashid Khan of Afghanistan, and Mitchell Santner of New Zealand, among many others.
Chakravarthy’s consistency and ability to deliver in key moments have cemented his place in this exclusive club, and with one more T20I remaining the Kolkata Knight Riders bowler is likely to perform even better and end the series on an even more brighter note.
