Trouble For KL Rahul! Shubman Gill Becomes Hot Captaincy Candidate For Sri Lanka ODIs

According to the Press Trust of India, Shubman Gill is in contention to lead India in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. The young batter joins the captaincy race following India's emphatic 4-1 win in the Zimbabwe T20Is under his leadership. 


Problem for KL Rahul as Gill enters ODI captaincy race

According to multiple media reports, several senior players- Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja- will likely be rested for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. 

Furthermore, Rohit's deputy, Hardik Pandya, might withdraw from the ODIs owing to personal reasons. However, it has been confirmed that Pandya will lead the Men in Blue in the shortest format. 

If this turns out to be accurate, the selection committee might appoint experienced keeper-batter KL Rahul as the captain for the Lankan ODI leg. 

Meanwhile, after leading India to a clinical series triumph in Zimbabwe, young batter Shubman Gill has also entered the conversation for ODI captaincy in Rohit's absence. 

Considering Rahul's age and Pandya's fitness issues, India might consider Gill their long-term vice-captaincy option with the Champions Trophy on the horizon. 

The stylish right-handed batter recently received massive applause for his tactical nuances in the Zimbabwe series. 

Furthermore, he has ample leadership experience at the highest level, having captained Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2024. 

Given his brand value and potential, we shouldn't be surprised if Gill is chosen as Rohit Sharma's deputy in the 50-over format.
