Shathira Jakir Jessy is all set to make history, as she will reportedly be the first Bangladeshi woman umpire to officiate at a senior World Cup. The ICC will likely name her as one of the umpires for the upcoming Women’s World Cup 2025.
The Women’s World Cup will take place from September 30 to November 2, with matches scheduled across four venues in India and one in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh’s women’s team will feature in the tournament for the second time in a row. They begin their campaign against Pakistan on October 2 in Colombo.
Shathira Jakir Jessy To Officiate As Umpire In Women’s World Cup
According to the Daily Star, Shathira Jakir Jessy will be named in the umpire panel for the marquee ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 event. Jessy, 34, is already a trailblazer in Bangladesh cricket.
She became the country’s first international woman umpire and has been steadily rising through the ranks. She has previously officiated in the Women’s Asia Cup and also stood in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Pakistan earlier this year.
Apart from global tournaments, Jessy has also been busy at home. Recently, she officiated in the Bangladesh emerging women’s team series against South Africa, showing her consistency and ability to handle pressure at different levels of the game.
The full list of umpires for the eight-team tournament will be announced by the ICC soon.
Women’s World Cup Schedule Likely To Be Tweaked
ICC unveiled a full-fledged schedule for the Women’s World Cup back in June. However, Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, originally slated to host the semi-final and final of the tournament, has been reportedly declared unsafe for large-scale games.
The Karnataka government made its judgement after a deadly stampede claimed 11 lives outside the stadium during RCB’s victory parade. Now, the BCCI is running against time to find an alternate venue so that the tournament doesn’t get disrupted.
