Afghanistan Cricket have reshaped its support staff ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 by appointing Toby Radford as the new batting coach. The Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed Radford’s appointment on a one-year contract.
Radford will replace Andrew Puttick, as the team continues to strengthen its backroom setup before the global event in India and Sri Lanka.
Toby Radford to join Afghanistan camp
According to Cricbuzz, Toby Radford is expected to join the Afghanistan squad ahead of the three-match T20I series against West Indies, scheduled on January 19, 21 and 22 in Dubai.
Alongside him, the ACB has also brought in Robert Ahmun as the new strength and conditioning coach.
Radford arrives with an impressive coaching resume. A former first-class cricketer for Middlesex and Sussex, Toby is an ECB Level 4 certified coach and a respected figure in international coaching circles.
He previously served as batting coach at Pakistan’s High Performance Centre and as head of high performance for the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Currently, he is also associated with Dhaka Capitals as head coach in BPL.
One of the highlights of Radford’s career was his role in the West Indies’ coaching staff during their T20 World Cup triumph in 2012.
He was also part of the setup when the Caribbean side registered a historic Test series win in England in 2019.
In domestic cricket, Toby Radford guided Middlesex to a national T20 title and has worked as head coach of Glamorgan.
Afghanistan in transition phase as Trott exits ahead of World Cup
The appointment comes at a time when Afghanistan are preparing for a bigger transition. The ACB has already confirmed that head coach Jonathan Trott will step down after the T20 World Cup 2026.
Trott, who took charge in 2022, has overseen a remarkable period for Afghanistan, including their historic semi-final finish in the 2024 T20 World Cup and several wins against higher-ranked teams.
Trott had expressed gratitude for his time with the team, praising the players’ passion and resilience.
The board, meanwhile, has made it clear that leadership changes are part of long-term planning and evolution.
With Radford and Ahmun now on board, the ACB has also revealed that they are actively looking to appoint a new head coach and a spin bowling coach in the coming months.
