The West Indies cricket team is undergoing a major leadership transition across formats, with Kraigg Brathwaite stepping down as Test captain ahead of their upcoming home series against Australia. In an emotional video, Brathwaite announced that he will pass on the baton soon.
West Indies are slowly losing their grip in world cricket as their standards have fallen steeply in the recent past. They didn’t qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup and weren’t a part of the Champions Trophy either.
Hence, the board has decided to overhaul the entire setup to bounce back from the low point.
Kraigg Brathwaite Resigns As WI’s Test Captain
In a significant turn of events, Kraigg Brathwaite has decided to step down as West Indies’ Test captain. Brathwaite, who took over the captaincy in March 2021, officially informed Cricket West Indies (CWI) of his decision earlier this year.
His captaincy witnessed a number of record-breaking successes, such as West Indies' first Test win in Australia in 27 years, and a nail-biting eight-run victory in Brisbane in 2024. He also guided the team to a historic victory in Pakistan earlier this year, breaking a 34-year wait in the nation.
Under his leadership, the Windies defeated England at home in 2022 and won a 2-0 series against Bangladesh during the COVID-19 pandemic.
But Brathwaite mentioned in the video that it is time to hand over the baton and he will keep contributing to Windies cricket with his service as a batter.
West Indies To Host Australia After A Decade
Australia is set to return to the Caribbean for Test cricket after nearly a decade, marking their first series in the region since 2015. CWI announced the schedule featuring a 3-match Test series, followed by a 5-match T20I series in June and July 2025.
The Test series will begin at Kensington Oval, Barbados, on June 25. The second and third Tests will be held in Grenada and Jamaica. After the Tests, both teams will battle in 5 T20Is across Sabina Park and Basseterre.
