RR beats CSK in a last over thriller [Source: @IPL/X.com]
RR beat CSK by 6 runs in a thrilling contest of the IPL 2025 season. Nitish Rana’s 81-run carnage in the first inning helped the Royals post a total of 182 runs on the board. However, CSK flattered once again in the chase. Apart from Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 63 off 44 balls, no batter stepped up. With 20 needed off the final over, Sandeep Sharma kept his calm to steer RR to a 6-run win.
Here’s how CSK vs RR panned out in Guwahati:
Nitish Rana Turns Beast To Trash CSK
RR were asked to bat first and the top order made the most out of the powerplay. While Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal to get an early breakthrough, Nitish Rana unleashed absolute carnage. He was promoted to no.3, above Riyan Parag. Rana first targeted Jamie Overton to slam 30 runs in two overs. Rana then went after veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin.
In the fifth over, Nitish hammered 2 powerful sixes and a single over to bring up a 19-run mega over. He slammed a 21-ball fifty and owing to his carnage, RR had 79 runs on the board at the end of the first powerplay.
CSK Bowlers Pull Up Great Recovery
However, RR’s middle order failed to capitalise on the momentum set by Nitish Rana, who got dismissed by Ashwin on 81 off 36 balls. Riyan Parag played his part, scoring 37 off 28 balls. However, Dhruv Jurel (3) and Shimron Hetmyer (19) couldn’t trouble the scoreboard.
Wickets kept falling in a cluster which hampered RR’s scoring rate. Eventually, CSK’s bowler pressed the brakes and restricted RR to 182 runs. For CSK, Khaleel Ahmed, Noor Ahmad and Matheesha Pathirana picked up 2 wickets each.
Jofra Archer Breathes Fire With New Ball
CSK had a false start in the second inning as Rachin Ravindra was dismissed on a duck by Jofra Archer. Archer, who has been struggling to gain rhythm, finally responded with the new ball.
The pressure was building on Ravindra as he struggled to connect with the away-going deliveries, and Archer smartly persisted with his plan. On the third attempt, the Kiwi batter finally nicked one, and Dhruv Jurel made no mistake behind the stumps.
While Rahul Tripathi and Ruturaj Gaikwad knitted a 46-run partnership, Wanindu Hasaranga bowled a game-changing spell. He got rid of Tripathi before Riyan Parag pulled off a blinder to dismiss dangerman Shivam Dube. Dube drilled that drive hard, but Parag dived to his right and plucked it out of thin air.
RR Calm Nerves To Steal A Thrilling Win
From 92/4, Gaikwad held the fort for CSK as long as he could. He slammed a gritty half-century (63) but lost his wicket at the worst time possible. Wanindu Hasaranga rolled his magic arm once again to force Gaikwad to hole out to Yashasvi Jaiswal at long-on, claiming his 4th wicket of the day.
However, the game got interesting at the end. CSK needed 39 off the final 2 overs and Tushar Deshpande conceded 19 runs in the penultimate over. With MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja on the crease, Riyan Parag made a bold move of handing the ball to Sandeep Sharma over Jofra Archer.
Regardless, Sandeep repaid the faith by dismissing Dhoni on the second delivery. Despite getting hit for a six, the bowler kept his calm and steered RR to a much-needed 6-run thrilling victory.
