The New Zealand side received a massive boost right before the World Cup 2023 as the veteran pacer Tim Southee, who injured his thumb in the series against England, has been declared fit. The news comes at a time when coach Gary Stead and other members of the board were sweating over the fitness of their senior player after Kane Williamson was termed as a doubtful starter, too.

Southee who fractured his thumb while fielding against the Three Lions in the slip cordon as he dislocated his bone and had to undergo surgery. However, the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have decided to send him with the main squad to India in the hope that he will be available for their opening game against England on 5th October.

Meanwhile, pacer Kyle Jamieson will also travel with the side to only prepare and help during the net sessions and majorly as a backup, however, he won't be able to feature in warm-up games before the World Cup as he is not part of the official squad.

Another important news for the Kiwi side is the availability of Kane Williamson, who had a six-month layoff after suffering a knee injury in March but has made sufficient progress in time to be able to lead the side. But it remains to be seen whether he's available for the opening game or not.

Also, the BlackCaps completed a 2-0 series whitewash against Bangladesh, with Lockie Ferguson leading the side in the absence of other seniors.

Now, New Zealand will feature in their warm-up games to be played against Pakistan and South Africa on 29th September and 2nd October, respectively.
