Netherlands Handed 'Shock' Defeat By Karnataka Right Before 2023 World Cup

With the all-important ICC World Cup 2023 just a few days away, teams are preparing for the event in India in every possible way. The teams have started to arrive, and some are already here to taste the conditions before anyone else, like the Netherlands side.

However, things have not turned out how they would have liked as Karnataka's domestic side heavily outplayed them in a 50-over game played on Monday at Alur ground. The margin of loss turned out to be a mammoth 142 runs after conceding 265 from the hosts.

In reply to Karnataka's total, the Dutch were left shell-shocked by the swing and lines of the bowlers, who dismissed the first seven batters for ducks. Vidwath Kaverappa's (4/8) and V Koushik's (4/10) magical spells ended the Netherlands' hope to defeat the Ranji giants.

In the end, they were bowled for just 123. However, the score could have been embarrassingly less than this as, at one stage, the Orange brigade were 36 for nine, but a solid 89-run stand between Ryan Klein (49) and Paul van Meekeren (45) took them to a respectable total.

Karnataka's Devdutt Padikkal (56) and R Samarth (81) scored blistering half-centuries in the first innings, with Vikramjit Singh and Ryan Klein bagging four and three wickets respectively for the visitors.

"This was the first competitive match we played after qualifying for the World Cup, and we were playing against a competitive side. So, the lack of match practice showed. We had some takeaways from the match as well. Vikramjit Singh's four-wicket haul, Kyle's all-round performance and his last-wicket partnership with Paul (Van Meekeren) showed that we can bat till No. 11,"  said Netherlands' coach Ryan Cook after the game.

Previously, the Dutch arrived in India early and, since, have held a camp in Karnataka's Alur ground as they acquired four Indian net bowlers to help them prepare for the mega-event.

Regarding the World Cup, the first match will be played between England and New Zealand on 5th October at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
