With the upcoming season of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 nearing, all clubs are busy fine-tuning their squads.

In an unexpected move, Melbourne Renegades have acquired the services of England's Joe Clarke for the upcoming edition, who makes a switch from Melbourne Stars.

The wicketkeeper-batter has been highly successful for Stars making 800 runs in the last two BBL editions, having played for Perth Scorchers in 2020-21 as well.

Clarke is the third overseas signing for the Renegades, who already have Quinton de Kock and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in their ranks.

In a statement, Clarke expressed delight over making the switch and looked forward to taking the club into the BBL finals.

Here's what Clarke said

“I’m excited to come down to Melbourne again for the summer and this time be in red at Marvel Stadium. The list the Renegades have put together has some serious talent and experience and I’m looking forward to being part of that and building for a second consecutive finals appearance.”

However, Clarke will miss the final leg of BBL 2023-24, as the England player will leave to play in SA20.

In 173 T20s, the 27-year-old has scored 4,349 runs at an impressive strike rate of 146.72 and slammed four tons and 27 50s.

General Manager James Rosengarten stated how the club has been keeping an eye on Clarke, and wanted to acquire him this season.

“Joe was an active part of our overseas draft strategy this year. While we were limited in how we could use our picks at the Overseas Player Draft, we had a plan to secure Joe as quickly as we could and it came off which is great for our Club."

Nic Maddinson has been appointed skipper, and will begin their BBL campaign on December 8 against Sydney Sixers.
