Former India cricketer and crucial member of the 2011 & 2007 World Cup winning squads, Gautam Gambhir, has been one of the most controversial figures in Indian cricket even after his retirement from the game. However, someone from the current World Cup 2023 squad has spoken for him, calling him the 'most misunderstood cricketer'.
Speaking to Harsha Bhogle on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin has firmly asserted that Gautam is the greatest team player who puts the country first instead of himself.
Ashwin was relatively straightforward in mentioning that Gambhir has done a lot for the team for which he doesn't get the deserving credit.
"Gautam Gambhir is the most misunderstood cricketer in India. He's the greatest team man. People give him much lesser credit than he deserves, he was a selfless individual always thinking about the team."
The left-handed opener was the highest run-scorer for India in the finals of both the ICC World Cups in 2007 & 2011, as his heroics made Men in Blue a formidable side in world cricket. However, post-retirement, his statements and specific actions have gotten him involved in a few headlines, including his face-off against Virat Kohli.
Meanwhile, Ashwin, who was nowhere near the one-day side, entered the World Cup squad a week before the mega-event after an injury to left-arm spinner Axar Patel. This was after his solid comeback in the three-match series against Australia, where he disturbed the visitors with his classic deliveries.
