Ravichandran Ashwin has heaped a unique praise on his former Indian and IPL captain MS Dhoni. Speaking with renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle on his YouTube channel, the star all-rounder compared Dhoni’s leadership attributes with that of a movie director, stating how the cricketer’s mind operates in a similar manner while assessing match situations and players’ roles.

Ashwin himself shot to fame in Indian cricket under his captaincy, and made his international debut in 2010. Moreover the Tamil Nadu spin veteran spent 10 seasons alongside MS Dhoni in the IPL, before eventually parting ways with the CSK franchise ahead of the 2018 edition of the tournament.

Ravi Ashwin heaps unique praise for MS Dhoni

Ravichandran Ashwin praised MS Dhoni for his leadership attributes and compared the same to the skillset of a movie director. Using the analogy, the legendary spinner claimed that just a like good movie director, Dhoni can pick characters and task perfect persons to assume that character for any match situation.

Ashwin described the same while signifying Dhoni’s role in India’s 2011 World Cup win at home. As per him, star players like Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag among others, all performed their exact given roles which ultimately ended India’s 28-year-old title drought.

“MS Dhoni is not a captain; he is a director. He is actually a very very good movie director like he is a director for the game. What does a movie director do? He picks characters and he picks the exact cast for that character, right? So, I think MS Dhoni, in his head, he picks a character. He knows where that character fits, who is the person for the character and gives that person the exact situation to go and play his role to the T.”

Ravichandran Ashwin now has the opportunity to replicate his 2011 World Cup glory, albeit under a different captain this time around. He is one of the 15 Indian players selected for their 2023 home event, set to be led by Rohit Sharma.
