Ravichandran Ashwin has pulled the curtains on his IPL career and it couldn’t have been more poetic. The off-spinner began his journey in yellow back in 2009 and fittingly signed off in the same colours in 2025.
CSK Pay Heartfelt Tribute To Ravichandran Ashwin After IPL Retirement
To mark the end of an era, Chennai Super Kings, the franchise he started and finished with, put out a heartfelt tribute on X in a moving video.
CSK’s tribute video for Ashwin opened with the tale of a young Chennai boy dreaming of cricket and growing into the world-class spinner everyone knows today.
In the video, Ashwin himself reflects on what CSK meant to him: “The early impression of CSK was it was a stage way beyond… Someone like me who is just walking into the stage it felt like it was huge… all the international cricket… was I ready.”
The clip then fades into text that read: “A young boy in Chennai who began his dream in yellow bids farewell in the same shade. Thank you Ash. Thank you legend.”
To cap it off, CSK wrote in the caption: “Engu thodangum engu mudiyum... (Where to begin and where to end) The journey of Yellove that lives in every heartbeat! #ThankYouAsh #WhistlePodu.”
The Highs And The Homecoming
Ashwin was one of the cornerstones of CSK’s early success. He played a key role in back-to-back title wins in 2010 and 2011 under MS Dhoni. In fact, many still remember his spell against Chris Gayle in the 2011 final, where he outfoxed the big man and set the tone for CSK’s victory.
After stints with Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, he made a homecoming to CSK in 2025. Across IPL and Champions League games, he bagged 127 wickets in 130 matches CSK, finishing as the second-highest wicket-taker among CSK spinners, behind only Ravindra Jadeja.
However, the 2025 season wasn’t one to remember for Ashwin. He picked up just seven wickets in nine games at an economy rate north of nine. For the first time since becoming a household name, he didn’t complete a full season with Dhoni benching him in the second half of the campaign.
Speculation of a trade floated around before the mini-auction, but Ashwin shocked everyone by announcing retirement instead. He hinted at exploring overseas T20 leagues but his IPL chapter is now officially closed.
