Virat Kohli, one of the greatest modern-day batters to exist, reaffirmed his authority in Test cricket with a majestic hundred against Australia in the Perth Test. With his career on the line, Kohli unleashed his brilliance and powered India to a gigantic 534-run lead. With this hundred, Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to top an elite record list.

India’s dominance in the Perth Test against Australia reached its peak on Day 3. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 161 off 297 balls, whereas KL Rahul also hit 77 off 176. Then, King Virat Kohli came in to bat at no.4. Having scored just 93 runs in the last 6 innings, pressure was mounting on Kohli. But for a man who loves the Australian conditions, the challenge was insignificant.

Virat Kohli breaks records with gritty ton vs Australia

Virat Kohli picked out some glorious shots from his books to bring up his 81st international hundred. With a smile of relief followed by a token of appreciation for his wife, Anushka Sharma, Kohli celebrated his milestone in style. Not only that, with his 30th Test hundred, Kohli managed to shake history books to post new records for himself.

All records broken on Kohli with 100 in Perth Test:

  • Virat Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar (6) to become the Indian player with the most hundreds (7) in Australia
  • Kohli surpassed Don Bradman's Test record of 29 Test centuries as the recent hundred was his 30th in red ball cricket
  • The Perth 100 was Virat Kohli's 10th hundred across all formats in Australia, most by any visiting batter
  • He also equalled Sunil Gavaskar's record of most Test centuries (7) by an Indian in away countries
  • Kohli is only visiting batter to hit two consecutive hundreds in Perth
  • Virat Kohli is the only fifth Indian batter to score 2000 runs in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

India inch closer to victory in Perth

As soon as Virat Kohli reached his century, captain Jasprit Bumrah declared the innings with a 534 runs target set for Australia. However, the hosts, tired after 2 days of fielding, had the worst possible start. Nathan McSweeney was undone by Jasprit Bumrah’s sharp inswinger.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins came in as night watchman only to be humiliated by Mohammed Siraj. A length delivery nipped away, and Cummins nicked it to Virat Kohli at slips. To add to the drama, Marnus Labuschagne had a brain fade moment as he offered no shot, thinking the bounce would help. But Perth's pitch betrayed him, leading to another LBW dismissal. At stumps on Day 3, Aussies were 12/3.
