In the latest development, Bangladesh's star batter Tamim Iqbal has announced his international retirement for the 2nd time. Iqbal took to Facebook to announce that he has decided to hang up his boots.
Tamim, who made his Bangladesh debut in 2007, had also announced his retirement back in July 2023, when he just held a press conference and hung up his boots. However, he soon reversed his decision, as he said that former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina had asked him to rethink his decision.
Despite taking a U-turn on his decision, Tamim had not played a solitary match for The Tigers since September 2023. Since then, he has been playing in domestic leagues and is currently playing in the BPL for Fortune Barishal.
Tamim Iqbal Takes A Dig At BCB
In his retirement post, Iqbal slammed BCB for his 2023 World Cup snub and also revealed that he was in contention for the Champions Trophy 2025 selection. He wrote:
“I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. With such a major event like the Champions Trophy approaching, I don’t want any discussions around me to disturb the team’s focus.”
“Captain Shanto genuinely wanted me to return, and I had discussions with the selectors as well. I’m grateful for their belief in me, but I’ve listened to my heart,” he added.
"What happened before the 2023 World Cup was a big shock for me, especially since I wasn’t dropped for cricketing reasons. Wherever I’ve gone, fans expressed their wish to see me back in the national team. Even at home, my son often told his mother that he wanted to see me playing for Bangladesh again,” said Tamim.
“I’m sorry to disappoint my supporters. To my son, I say, ‘One day when you’re older, you’ll understand your father’s decision,” Tamim concluded.
